All-new four-cylinder engine available on the '09 Highlander

The 2009 Toyota Highlander will soon hit dealerships with an all-new four-cylinder engine. The all-new 2.7-liter inline four-cylinder engine will enhance the Highlander's performance, response at all engine speeds and value and help reduce emission levels. The 2009 Toyota Highlander is a mid-size SUV. The four-cylinder Highlander will be EPA-rated as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEVII). It will greatly reduce noise and vibration to levels usually expected in a V6 or large engines. The four-cylinder powertrain will deliver 187 horsepower at 5,800 RPM and 186 pound-feet of peak torque at 4,100 RPM on regular 87 octane fuel. The engine will be coupled to an all-new, smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission. It will accelerate to 60 mph in 9.7 seconds and tow up to 3,500 pounds when equipped with a tow package. Alter Your Driving Style

SLOWDOWN: Going fast, whether to keep up with traffic or to save even five minutes of driving time, may seem worth it. But if you're on the highway, driving 60 mph instead of 70 mph, it actually will save you 2-4 miles per gallon over the duration of your trip.
EASY ON THE THROTTLE: Do not accelerate quickly or stomp on the brakes. Try coasting to a stop. You'll save on fuel as well as wear and tear on your brake pads and rotors (even more savings)
SHUT DOWN: If you are going to be waiting for someone or something, even for just minutes. It can make a difference in your fuel economy.
NO CAR WARM UPS: Thanks to technology, most modern fuel-injected vehicles only really need about 30 seconds to warm up. That might be hard for a lot of people, especially here in Florida, but try this tip; If you have parked your vehicle for a long period of time in the hot, muggy sun, before you start your vehicle with the AC on high, open the windows first without starting the engine and wait a few minutes to let the hot air out.
WINDOWS UP: Again this might be tough, especially on pleasant days. But having the windows down creates aerodynamic drag that causes an engine to work harder. Test shows, that on highway driving, this can decrease fuel economy by up to 10 percent.

Maintain Your Vehicle

TIRE PRESSURE: Making sure your vehicle's tires are set to the factory recommended pressure. Doing so can increase fuel economy by as much as 3.3 percent.
AIR FILTERS: Next time you get your oil change, have the air filter checked as well. Having a clean air filter can save you up to 10 percent on fuel cost.
TOP RUNNING ORDER: Read your vehicle's owners manual and follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule. If it's time for that tune up, cleaning the throttle body, or making sure that your fuel injectors are not clogged, having it done should increase your fuel economy by 4.1 percent.
THE RIGHT GAS: Read your owner's manual for the recommended fuel octane and no more. Premium-grade gas is more costly and will not improve economy in vehicles that can run on regular.
LIGHTEN UP: The less weight in your vehicle, the better your fuel economy. In other words, clean out your car's trunk.
GREASE UP: Using the manufacturer's specified motor oil, and changing it per factory recommendations, can improve fuel economy.

Modify Your Driving Mentality

COMBINE TRIPS: Don't run out 2 or 3 times a day. If possible, visit all the stores you can in one trip.
Let someone else drive at times, maybe alternate with a neighbor or friend, as to plan trips to the stores or other errands together.
EXERCISE: If your destination is close enough, try maybe walking or riding a bike.
COOL DOWN. GAS UP ON COOL MORNINGS. FUEL IS DENSER WHEN COLD. GAS PUMPS MEASURE BY VOLUME, SO IF YOU PUMP WHEN IT'S COLD, YOU GET MORE GAS FOR YOUR BUCK.
